So many wonderful memories and Black Belts were created within those walls. In fact, if those walls could talk, oh what stories they would tell! The building has gone through many color schemes, veneers, and management companies since then, but the shell remains the same.

Kim “Cultivator” Thomas, Kiado-Ryu Black Belt #63, shares a moment of his fightin’ side during a kata performance at the KIA. K.C., as he is often called, is a warrior for sure. But, just for the record, his normal nature is very warm, loving, and humorous. Just don’t upset him!

Annette “Warrior” Dale shares a playful moment with her father after her green belt test. Her father, Dr. Allen Carden, is a professor of history in the California State University system. Dr. Carden and his wife, Denice, reside in the San Joaquin Valley.

The centerpiece of the Karate Institute of America is its beautifully designed and inlaid logo with both “KIA” and “Kiado-Ryu” sewn into the carpet. Designed and created by Dave “Rugman” Sampson, Kiado-Ryu Black Belt #42, the logo serves as a reminder of the path we follow.

Second Degree Black Belt, Mike “Shooter” Benedict, executes a fist to Bob’s face during a practice session. Mike’s understanding and experiences of life offer all of us a rich gift of appreciation. Although in his fifties, Shooter is an outstanding example of a true martial artist: helpful, respectful, kind, studious, and tough!

Chris “Growler” Grau, Kiado-Ryu Black Belt #36, a 2nd Dan and webmaster of Kiado-Ryu.com, executes an elbow strike during a close-quarter practice session. Having excellent, functional, and powerful hand and arm strikes—which Growler most definitely has—is a most important ingredient of being an excellent Karate Institute of America Black Belt. Oh, the beard looks good, too!
